I am currently half-way through the campaign in Supreme Commander 2. I thought this would be a good place to stop and get my thoughts down.
Supreme Commander It Is Not
I can definitely understand some of the complaints. The battles are a lot smaller than Total Annihilation or Supreme Commander. The longest mission I have played up to this point took me about 45 minutes. And I definitely could beat that mission quicker with some more practice.
I also figured out pretty quickly which gameplay change caused such gnashing of teeth. In TA and SupCom, the engineer would start building a structure as soon as you issued the order whether or not you had enough resources. As resource came in, it would build what it could and then wait for more.
SupCom 2, however, uses the more traditional mechanic of not letting you build something if you don’t immediately have the resources. They made this change because it was so easy to crash your economy in SupCom. You could get to the point where nothing was being built because you had too many things trying to go up at the same time.
A lot of SupCom players see this as dumbing down the game. They consider managing your economy part of the strategy. If you crash it, you are just a n00b who needs to l2p.
Basically, anyone looking for SupCom 2 to be more SupCom was disappointed. The question is, how does it stand up on it’s own?
Is It That Bad?
Now I have already admitted that my experience with SupCom is extremely limited. I didn’t have as much baggage coming into SupCom 2. And I have to say, I am really enjoying it!
The campaign has gotten a bad wrap for its weak story. And I admit, the story is pretty weak. So far I’ve had a pretty good idea what was going to happen before it ever did. And I’m not holding my breath that it will change.
But I am really enjoying the gameplay as I play through the campaign. And I feel like I’m getting a pretty good feel for it. By no means would I consider myself an expert but I’m starting to figure out better ways to do things.
I have also played a few skirmishes by myself and with betic. We’ve played 2v2 against the computer on easy, normal, and hard. We used tank rushes and were able to destroy the AI on easy and normal, as would be expected. The hard AI, however, proved a little too tough. We were able to kill one of them but the other was too advanced for our tanks to do much good.
I am hoping I can get the campaign finished by the 16th, when Age of Empires Online is released. If not, I will definitely come back to it soon. I will update again when I’m done.
