I have decided to overcome my fear of the RTS genre and dig into Supreme Commander 2. I picked it up a while back in a Steam sale but never gave it a try. Now, however, it’s time to overcome my fears and jump in.
I should mention that my general fear of RTSs was not the only reason I didn’t try SupCom 2. There was a pretty big backlash from the Supreme Commander crowd against some of the changes that also turned me off. Of course, I didn’t really play a lot of the original SupCom so I didn’t really know what the uproar was about. I did, however, play a lot of the game that preceded it. In fact, it is one of my favorite games of all time. Total Annihilation.
TA is one of only 2 RTS games I played extensively (the other being Age of Empires 2). I love the mechanics in it. Specifically, I love that I could select as many units as I wanted per group and that I could queue up a ton of orders for my builders. It made the battles seem epic.
Supreme Commander was supposed to take that formula and expand on it. I’m not really sure how well it succeeded because I didn’t play much of it. I sunk into my fear of RTSs before it came out. However, from what I’ve read, it succeeded pretty well.
From what I understand, SupCom 2 has gotten away from the TA formula. For example, the battles are much smaller, which means they finish much quicker. I remember having TA matches that went 2 hours before any real battles began. Apparently SupCom 2 battles can be over in 15-20 minutes.
If I am going to be honest, my “indignation” that they changed things so much is really just an excuse. I don’t know if the changes made things better or worse. In fact, I don’t even really know what the changes are. It was just easier to say, “They changed it! It’s no good! I’m not playing it!”, than to admit my fear.
Wish me luck!
