I recently finished chapter 3 (The Salt Factory) of Super Meat Boy. The chapters are definitely getting tougher as I go, as you would expect. Of course, I am also getting better at the game but it still is taking me longer to get through each one.
Frustration Sets In
In my original post about Super Meat Boy, I talked about how I wasn’t getting frustrated because I always felt like I was making progress even when I was dying a lot. Well, that changed in chapter 3. I hit a wall getting the bandage in level 3-20. I actually quit the game a few times out of frustration before I finally got it.
I want to take a minute to explain the level before I get into my thoughts about why this one frustrated me so much. Here you can see where the bandage is in this level:
The bandage was behind the key walls on the top level. (It’s not there right now because I forgot to take a screen shot while I was trying for it.) So I needed to find the key to open those wall. Here it is:
So there’s Bandage Girl and two keys. The one under the cannon opens the wall to Bandage girl while the one behind her opens the one to the bandage. This is where this level killed me over and over.
In SMB, the key walls are chained together. Picking up the key causes the wall to open one piece at a time. Normally this is pretty fast. Sometimes, however, it is delayed. This level is one of those sometimes.
The wall in front of Bandage Girl has a pretty big delay between portions. So I pick up the key to start the sequence and then have to avoid the cannon until the wall is gone. SON-OF-YOUR-MOTHER I HATE THAT THING! I died at least 100 times jumping around trying to keep from getting shot by that stupid thing! I seriously considered skipping it but just couldn’t bring myself to do it.
Passive vs. Active Levels
So why did this level frustrate me so much when others didn’t? I pretty sure I died more on other levels. But none came closer to making me quit than this one.
I think the biggest difference is it being an “active” level instead of a “passive” level. A lot of the levels up to this point are not actively trying to kill you. They have spikes and pits and floating things but none of those things are seeking you out. The cannons, however, are actively trying to end Meat Boy’s quest. This adds a level of complexity that caused me a lot of frustration.
Of course having 1 level of frustation how of the 120 (including the dark worlds) so far is pretty good odds. I’m definitely optimistic at this point since I made it through the whole dark world without this kind of frustration. Hopefully I won’t hit anything like it again.
Here are my stats up to this point. It looks like I’ve died a lot but I know that number is REALLY low compared to those who have completed the game and achievements.
I’m also a little confused by the percentages. How I can be only 48% done with the light and dark worlds but be 55% done with the whole game? Actually, now that I think about it, it’s probably because of the glitch levels. I haven’t done the glitch world in chapter 3 but it shows me at 100% complete. Well, we’ll find out once I finish the game.
