I recently started listening to the Three Moves Ahead podcast on Flash of Steel, which focuses on strategy games. It has inspired me to revisit some of the RTS games I have but haven’t touched in a while, if at all.
My relationship with the RTS genre has been a bit rocky. On one hand, it is one of the things that makes PC gaming great. While some have tried, no one has been able duplicate the experience of a great RTS on the console. On the other hand, I am REALLY intimidated by the genre in general.
There have been a few RTSs that I’ve gotten into throughout the years. Total Annihilation is one of my favorite games ever. I’ve also played quite a bit of Warcraft 2 & 3, Starcraft, Age of Empires 2 and Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds (Age of Empires 2 with a Star Wars skin). However, I own a whole host of RTSs that I’ve been too scared to really try.
I have decided I need to suck it up and spend some time in an RTS. Of course, even as I say that, I have already chickened out a bit.
As I have gone back through the archives of Three Moves Ahead, I noticed that those guys REALLY love Sins of a Solar Empire. I always knew it was good. It received great reviews when it was first released. I just never realized how much strategy gamers love it. They bring it up in comparison to almost every RTS they discuss.
So I decided it was going to be my game for July. I already had the base game but not the expansion packs. The trinity pack was on sale for $10 on Impluse so I bought it and installed it. I fired it up and played through the tutorial. And then let myself get intimidated again.
Man, I am such a chicken. And I don’t really know why. Something about that game freaks me out. I just can’t get myself to pull the trigger and start playing. But I really want to play an RTS. So I am changing the plan.
Troy Goodfellow of Flash of Steel listed Supreme Commander 2 as his biggest surprise of 2010. I picked it up on a Steam sale a while back but haven’t played it. (I know. Surprise, surprise.) I wasn’t sure about it because so many Supreme Commander fans seemed down on it. But Troy has convince me to give it a go.
So July will be RTS therapy/Supreme Commander 2 month. I am going to overcome this fear, dang it! It will not get the best of me!
(Sorry, got a little excited there)
