Age of Empires Online launches tomorrow, August 16th. I have been looking forward to this one since it was announced. I can’t wait!
I mentioned before that there have been 2 RTSs in the past that I really enjoyed. One of them was Total Annihilation. The other was Age of Empires 2. (I also got into Star War Galactic Battlegrounds mainly because it was just Age of Empires 2 with a Star Wars skin.)
I loved the gameplay of AoE 2. It was the first RTS I played where the units would form up and march together, which was the one complaint I had against TA. I hated having to micromanage my army to keep the faster, weaker units from rushing off and dying before the slower, stronger units got there. AoE 2 solved that problem. I also liked the different game types, especially Regicide.
I was intrigued when it was first announced that AoE was going MMO. I have played several MMORPGs but never an MMORTS. I wasn’t sure how it was going to work. However, after playing some of the beta, I really got excited about it.
The Free-To-Play model evokes a lot of passion from people. There are some who see it as a scam. They think the developers use it as a way to get people in but then make it impossible to compete unless you pay
Personally, I don’t have a lot of experience with F2P games. I played through level one of Dungeons & Dragons Online when it went F2P and have a level 10 character in Lord of the Rings Online. However, I couldn’t tell you if those games require paying to compete at the later levels.
However, I do see F2P as a good thing and AoEO shows why. Yes, there are definitely limitations if you don’t pay. A pro civilization has advantages like being able to use better gear. However, it only costs $20 to get a pro civ. I don’t mind paying that, especially considering several other games I want to get this year will be quite a bit more.
There are going to be 2 civilizations at launch, the Greeks and the Egyptians. The question is, which one should I pick?
Like I said, I was in the beta for a while so I have played as the Greeks some. I didn’t get very far, though, so I wouldn’t say I have a good grasp of what makes them distinct. Actually, having played with them some makes me think I want to go with the Egyptians just to trying something different.
After looking at the images on the official website, I think I am going to go with the Egyptians. I like the look of the pyramids. I also like the idea of being able to use War Elephants. They just seem more interesting to me.
So I will be downloading Age of Empires Online tomorrow morning. Hopefully it will live up to my own hype.
